Maintaining Your Laminate Floor

Laminate flooring will give years of use if some basic cleaning and maintenance procedures are followed. Always check your manufacturer’s maintenance and cleaning guide for specific instructions:
• Vacuum laminate flooring regularly. Sweep flooring regularly. Wipe with a SLIGHTLY damp cloth or mop when needed. Most likely this is all the cleaning the floor will ever need.
• DO NOT use any harsh chemicals, abrasives, scouring products, or steel wool on laminate flooring.
• Because it is a manufacturing trait, laminate flooring’s shine cannot be changed. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REFINISH, STRIP, SAND, WAX, POLISH, OR LACQUER A LAMINATE FLOOR.
• To prolong the life of laminate flooring, it is recommended that felt pads, wide-based casters, or hard plastic floor protectors be placed under all chair and table legs. Try to avoid metal protectors, but if used, make sure they are rustproof. If possible, always lift heavy furniture rather than dragging, pushing, or pulling it.
• Place doormats and/or rugs near outside doorways to collect excess moisture, dirt, and debris.

Occasionally your laminate flooring may show slight signs of damage. Many laminate manufacturers offer repair kits for their products. Read their instructions carefully:

MINOR SCRATCHES: Once scratches appear they cannot be completely repaired. They will remain there for the life of your laminate flooring. However, you can make them less obvious with color-coordinating pencils that fill in the scratches.

SEAM GAPS: Colored seam filler will close the gaps between planks.

CHIPS, SCRATCHES, GOUGES: Colored burn-in sticks are used in conjunction with electric knives to make repairs. Always consult the manufacturer’s instructions.

NOTE: If a plank is too far damaged to repair, the individual board can be replaced without destroying or removing the rest of the floor. Special tools, router bits, and wood splines are needed, so it’s best to consult a professional installer for assistance.
