Hardwood
flooring installation notes
|
Some
important details to remember before, during, and after installation
of hardwood flooring are:
• Unfinished wood floors are generally less expensive purchase-wise,
but they entail considerably more work. They require installation,
sanding, and finishing. It is recommended that installation of unfinished
flooring be left to professionals. On the other hand, pre-finished
wood flooring requires installation only.
• It is not recommended that a unidirectional strip or plank
floor be installed using the glue-down method. Instead, attach strip
or plank to an appropriate subfloor using cleats, nails, or staples.
• Engineered strip, plank, and parquet can use the glue-down
method over subfloor materials.
• Solid parquet hardwood flooring can be glued directly to a
concrete slab in widths of 5/16”, 3/8”, and 7/16”.
Parquet any thicker requires the use of a vapor retarder. NOTE: Always
conduct a concrete slab moisture test before installing parquet to
make sure the surface is adequate for installation.
• Longstrip planks are designed for floating installation, but
most can be glued or stapled down as well.
• When installing solid wood flooring over a radiant heating
system, use strips 3” wide or less.
• Wood flooring installed over a heating plant or non-insulated
heating ducts may develop cracks unless protection from heat is provided.
It is recommended that a double layer of 15lb (or a single layer of
30lb) asphalt felt/building paper, or ½” standard insulation
board between joists under the flooring, be installed. CONTACT
