Suggestions on caring for you hardwood floor

Here are some suggestions to consider when repairing and preserving the beauty of your wood floor:
• Unfinished floors should be recoated every 5-7 years.
• Today’s wood floors usually don’t have to be sanded or refinished. Reapplying the urethane finish every 10-15 years should be adequate. Wood floors should be sanded or refinished only if they are severely damaged, or if a new color is desired.
• Hardwood flooring with a urethane finish is easiest to maintain because of the ultraviolet light-cured finish. Most finishes also contain aluminum oxide to increase durability and longevity.
• Just because a floor is treated with a protective coated finish doesn’t mean you should wash the floor with a wet mop. Hardwood floors should be cleaned using a soft broom or vacuum. To maintain the floor’s luster, use the manufacturers recommended cleaner with a dry mop and a terry cloth cover. NEVER buff a urethane-finished floor.
• Scratches which penetrate the stain will need a colorant and clear coat for repairs.
• Scratches that go deeply into wood will have to be repaired with a filler or binder to build up the damaged area before a new top layer of finish can be applied.
DO NOT make repairs with soft-colored putty. Within a few weeks small smudges of oily residue will attract dirt, dust, and other contaminants.
• Provide your flooring with adequate shielding from the sun; finishes can discolor over time and ultraviolet light can change the color of a finish if proper shading and curtains are not provided.
• Area rugs should be moved occasionally to maintain an even color in wood flooring’s finish.
• To minimize cracks and alterations in wood flooring during changing seasons, add moisture to the air during the dry winter/heating periods, and reduce humidity in the summer. A constant Relative Humidity of 50% (minimum 35%, maximum 55%) is recommended. (A hygrometer will tell you what the RH is daily.) Air conditioning and air dehumidifiers can remove excess moisture during the summer months.
