Tips On Re-Stretching Your Carpet

When problems with buckling, wrinkling, and bubbling occur, power stretching will usually remedy the situation.

It is important to note that carpet should not be overly cold and stiff. It cannot be properly stretched and will eventually become warm, relaxed and loose regardless of how tightly it was stretched during the original process.

1. To re-stretch carpeting, all furniture must be removed from the room(s). The carpet has to be loosened from all tackstrip, but the tackstrip should remain firmly anchored to the floor. At this time, check to ensure that the padding hasn’t bunched up under the carpet due to inadequate fastening of the cushion. Also, check to make sure the secondary backing has not delaminated. Correct these conditions before proceeding to the next step.

2. Seams should be cut open at all doorways.

3. Using a powerstretcher with extendable poles, the carpet should be stretched 1% to 1-1/2% in each direction (for about 18 inches on both sides of seams) using the four-way stretch method. All adjoining rooms and hallways should be stretched as well. To neglect this could cause wrinkling to reappear. Do not use a knee-kicker or stretcher with tail pins or a spike on the end during the re-stretching process.

4. Proper seaming should occur afterwards. Floor vents and doorways will require pieces to be seamed into carpet as the carpet is repositioned. Any edges being placed under metal strips should be sealed with adhesive to prevent unraveling. Edges that are fitted to hard surface flooring (tile, wood, etc.) should also be sealed. Latex-based seam sealer or thermoplastic sealers are recommended.
