| A
quality cushion/pad beneath carpet increases the lifespan of the carpet.
It provides additional resilience, helps insulate the home by preventing
heat loss through the floor, helps distort sound, and provides additional
comfort. The cushion raises carpet off the floor and provides an air
space so carpet can breathe. By letting more air come through the
carpet, the dirt that can grind fibers down is carried to the surface,
making cleaning more efficient.
FACTS
ABOUT CUSHIONING:
• Carpet cushioning/padding is made primarily from polyurethane
foam, fiber, or rubber, and comes in a variety of styles, density
levels, and constructions.
• For most residential carpet projects, choose padding not
more than 7/16 inch thick; Berbers and other low profile carpets
should have cushioning no more than 3/8 inch thick.
• Improperly specified cushion, cushion failure, or improper
maintenance can cause breakdowns of the carpet’s structure,
matting, wrinkling, buckling, and rippling, and separation of the
carpet seams. Improper cushion selection may also void some carpet
manufacturer’s warranties. Seek a flooring professional for
guidance in selecting the proper cushioning/padding.
• Some carpeting has cushioning attached. This is one of the
most effective ways to minimize indoor sounds.
